Round-up of a Tremendous Hockey Season
The 1st XI season certainly ended on a high this past week, as the team added two further titles to their list of achievements this season.
On Friday 23 March the squad faced local rivals in the final of the Midland Knockout Cup. Dollar’s games against the other Midland teams have always proved challenging.
The girls had played Heriot’s in the league the previous afternoon, with a score of 5-0. This certainly did not affect their performance. Dollar dominated throughout and had a two-goal lead going in to half-time. ‘They continued to put Kilgraston under pressure and gave them very little time on the ball. The girls’ physical condition was evident,’ said Miss Allan (Director of Hockey). The girls scored a further three goals in the second half, taking the final score to 5-0. The Midland U18 cup was presented to Captain Jenny Walls.
Next up was The Mary Erskine School in what was the very last game of the season. Playing three games in three days is a big ask for any player, ‘but once again the girls produced the goods,’ observed Miss Allan. It was a beautiful sunny day, the girls were tired but they never let it show, winning that match 3-0. This win enabled the squad to claim yet another title: the Scottish 1st XI league winners.
‘I am extremely proud of the girls and all that they have achieved, not just this year but throughout their time at Dollar,’ said Miss Allan. ‘Sadly we say have to farewell to our Form VI team members: Jenny Walls, Erin Stevens, Georgia Smith, Ellie Towers, Susie Green, Olivia Mears and Sam Robertson. I would like to thank them for all they have brought to hockey over the years both on and off the pitch and wish them every success in the future.’
To sum up, the 1st XI of 2017/2018 have won a remarkable list of titles this season. The Midland Cup; the Independent Boarding Schools Cup; the UK Invitational Cup; the Scottish League and the Scottish Cup. It is a clean sweep of wins that this year’s entire 1st XI team must take extraordinary pride in. The success of this team was certainly helped by a few exceptionally talented players, who have been recognised in their own right through the process of international selection.
Best wishes to the following girls with their International programs over the summer: Amy Salmon, Lucy Smith and Rhiannon Carr, who were all selected for Scotland U16 squad. And Eve Pearson, Georgia Smith, Jenny Walls and Erin Stevens, who were selected to the Scotland U18 squad.
Congratulations to the whole squad on a hugely successful season. Not only are they a talented group but they are an extremely hard working, committed and disciplined group who have fully earned every success that comes their way.
