Dollar Academy win World Pipe Band Championships

At the 2017 RSPBA World Championships at Glasgow Green on Saturday, Dollar Academy Juvenile Pipe Band regained their World Champion title with an excellent performance.

The band have won all five RSPBA ”majors” this year and now simultaneously hold the Scottish, British, UK, European and World titles. They were awarded the Champion of Champions  accolade for the 3rd time in the last 4 years. Pipe Major Freddie McFadyean, Form VI said “ this is a very proud day for everyone in the band. We have worked incredibly hard and the standard of Juvenile piping across Scotland at the moment is very high”. At the same event, the School’s Novice Juvenile A band finished runner up in their category and their consistency across the season resulted in the awarding of the Champion of Champions trophy for the third consecutive year.

2017 was the 70th anniversary of the World Pipe Band Championships. Over 40,000 people turned out to watch 219 bands from Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Canada, England, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, Switzerland, Argentina, the Netherlands and Scotland who brought over 8000 pipers and drummers to compete for title of World Champion in their respective grade. The event was live streamed by BBC Scotland and there are highlights on BBC TV on Wednesday evening.
