Dollar Team Wins National Hockey Title for Third Consecutive Year
Three years ago Scottish Hockey set up a new S3 Scottish Cup knock-out competition to run alongside the U18 version. The Cup was won by Dollar Academy in the first two seasons of its existence, in 2015 and 2016. This year the Dollar team again reached the final, played on Friday 17 March at the National Hockey Centre at Glasgow Green. And, for the third year in a row, Dollar won the S3 Scottish Cup, on this occasion beating The Mary Erskine School by 2 goals to 1.
‘This really is an amazing achievement,’ said the Rector, ‘and the girls thoroughly deserve the wonderful praise they are rightly receiving after working so hard throughout the season.’
The game proved an exciting affair, with Rhiannon Carr scoring for Dollar after just ten minutes. In an even game both sides defended well and there were few clear-cut chances. Shortly before half-time, The Mary Erskine School equalised from a penalty setting up a tense second half. Again there were few opportunities for either side to score but with 15 minutes to go Lucy Smith fashioned a brilliant solo goal, cutting inside a defender on the right hand side of the area before dispatching a perfectly struck reverse-stick shot into the far corner. The Mary Erskine players continued to battle hard as the clock ran down, but the Dollar defence held firm.
