Academic and Travel Scholarships
There are a number of Trusts and Scholarships that have been established to provide pupils with funding for the purpose of broadening their education and focusing their studies at Dollar Academy.
The Chapman/Buist Travel Scholarship
An award, in the region of £2,500, is available to encourage and support travel in one or more developing (resource-poor) countries, during a gap year, to experience other cultures and see first-hand the challenges and opportunities they present. The scholarship is intended for Form VI Dollar Academy pupils who have a vision for the future and an interest in understanding and developing strategies to "make the world a better place”.
Interested applicants should submit an essay responding to the question, “How does travel help to make me a better citizen of the world?” as well as a formal letter detailing your plans as to how the award would be spent. Letters and essays should be submitted to Mr Burbury no later than Friday 30th November 2018. Please note that entries submitted after this date will not be accepted.
The successful applicant will be announced in January 2019.
It is expected that the successful recipient of this award will carry out their proposed trip during a GAP year in session 2019-20 and would be required to keep a blog during the period of travel. They would also be required to submit a written account of their experience, of up to 10,000 words, within one month of their return to the UK. If any pupils have any questions regarding this Travel Scholarship they should see Mr Burbury.

Dates for applications from Dollar Academy pupils for the next round of funding will be published shortly. Normally, these should be received by February with interviews taking place in March.

The William Dick Brown Travel Prize Trust
This trust was set up by the widow and three sons (all Former Pupils) of William Dick Brown (1887-1968) in his memory. The trust provides funding to encourage and financially support pupils of Dollar Academy to travel outside of the United Kingdom in order to carry out some personal project which may encompass any field of study, sport or recreation.
Applications will be accepted from pupils at the school completing either Form V or VI. Applications should be made in writing to the Trustees, giving full name, address, date of birth and an outline of the nature and the funding of the proposed project. Originality, practicality and benefit to the applicant will be taken into account.
Awards will be not less than £1200 and are normally presented at Prize Giving. The project details of previous William Dick Brown Travel Prize recipients can be obtained from the school.
- Applications should be sent in the first instance to Mr Burbury, Assistant Rector, to be received before the end of the Spring term.
